Hilarious. My first thought was 'fascinating, Nemirovsky wrote a travel guide, I didn't know that'. And so many people have given it rave reviews. Then I looked again. How the fuck did Les Chiens et les Loups end up on Goodreads as a Michelin Guide to a bit of France????????????? I just had to add it to my books before somebody fixes it up. (7.5)This is the 9th book I have read by this author in recent years. She was a prolific writer and lived through harrowing times of Russian pogroms and met her premature death in the Jewish concentration camps while living in France. She introduces us through vivid descriptions to times and places we can only imagine. "With all their racing stables and famous art collections, they had fathers who were kids like me: starving, beaten, humiliated", November 2, 2014 This review is from: The Dogs and the Wolves (Paperback) A compulsive read, following two scions of the Jewish Sinner family: in the ghetto of their Ukrainian city lives Ada, with her widowed father and aunt. Up in the wealthy area is young Harry Sinner, living a totally different life. They do not mix socially, but Ada falls in love with him from afar. Following the Jewish pogroms, both families end up in Paris...but despite their differences in station, they have a shared cultural heritage... I really enjoyed this, although I found Harry's character somewhat weak in contrast to that of Ben. Have read three of Ms Nemirovsky's works and they've all been exquisite. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Harry Sinner also comes to Paris to mingle in exclusive circles, until one day he buys two paintings which remind him of his past...and the course of Ada's life changes once more. But then recession and revolutions shake previously rich regimes. As summer draws to a close, Ada's world is disintegrating, and she is faced with a fateful decision. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
