This is a collection of four darkly humorous fairy tales, illustrated with witty black-and-white drawings by Michael Sporn.

I have enjoyed these stories since I was a child because they are both more sophisticated and more unexpected than your usual fairy tales. Also, they are very funny and stick with you long after reading them. This collection is not as beloved as Dragon, Dragon, though. ( )

Four contemporary fairy tales by John Gardner, NOT the John Gardner who is the reteller of James Bond stories, but the author of October Light, Nickle Mountain, The Suicide Mountains, and several other books that make the other John Gardner read like a hack. These stories are "dry and wry", "disarming and richly fanciful", and they live up to the jacket blurb.
