This book describes La Salle's explorations. It goes into detail about the Mississippi River, Ohio River, Gulf of Mexico, and Louisiana Territory. Though very informative, it was quite detailed and longer than most picture books. I used this book during the explorer unit with groups 5 and 6, but couldn't get through the whole thing in one sitting. I had to finish the book in the next group meeting, which threw us off with subsequent topics. Like Columbus, it was difficult to find books short enough to read during center time, but that still meet the CCSS text complexity. Many explorer books seem to be extreme in one direction or the other-- short and babyish or long and tedious. ( )
