( ) When Captain Lacey saves a lady from an assailant late at night. She asks him to clear her dead husband of the charge of murder, and to find out the murderers of her husband Colonel Westin. To do this he must uncover what occurred after a battle during the Peninsular War. Looking forward to reading the next in this newly discovered series. A damsel in distress introduces Lacey to the Westins, Lydia and her recently deceased husband a regimental Colonel under indictment for murder. She maintains his death was murder; the ensuing scandals, intrigue, pressure from James Denis and assistance from Lucius Grenville keep Lacey busy in the second installment of this comfortable Regency series. I stayed up late last night finishing this one. A Regimental Murder is the second in the Captain Lacey mystery series. In this one Lacey rescues a beautiful widow named Lydia Westin from an attacker on the street. Her husband, she explains, was to stand trial for murder supposedly committed on the battlefield. While everyone else believes Colonel Westin fell down the stairs to his death, she confides the truth to Captain Lacey -- he had been found murdered in his bed. Lacey is besotted with the cool widow so agrees to investigate and try to clear Colonel Westin's name. The recurring characters are further rounded in this book, and I especially like the characters of Lucius Grenville and the mysterious James Denis. The pacing of the story is done exceedingly well so that there are no parts that are slow or difficult to get through. I was absorbed throughout, and look forward to the next book in the series. Gabriel Lacey prevents a mugging, and to his surprise discovers that he has saved a fine lady. The next day she summons him to her and asks him to investigate her husband's recent murder. Lacey is already half in love with her and adores mysteries, and immediately begins his detective work. He uncovers a conspiracy stranger and darker than he had bargained for. I love Captain Lacey, who is very competent, very self-contained, and prey to fits of severe melancholia. His relationships with Lord and Lady Brandon, his former mentors/protectors/friends, are tangled and fascinating. And I love the way other characters react to him, like how Grenville and Denis view him as something strange and slightly disturbing. It makes me wonder how he appears from the outside, instead of from his internal monologue. I look forward to the next installment of this series! keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
