Der bekannte Astrophysiker Carl Sagan (1934-1996) schildert in diesem Roman das bewegte Leben von Eleanor Arroway, die schon als Kind von technischen Dingen und rationalen Erklärungen begeistert war und erwachsen als Radioastronomin das Signal einer außerirdischen Zivilisation entdeckt. Diese Entdeckung ruft ein ungeheures Echo in der Weltbevölkerung hervor, die noch mitten im Kalten Krieg befangen, angesichts der Weiten des Weltalls wie eine handvoll Ameisen wirkt, die um ein paar Sandkörner zanken. Naturwissenschaftliche, gesellschaftliche, politische und religiöse Standpunkte kommen zu Wort, so dass Sagan ein realistisches Szenario entwirft, wie es hätte ablaufen können, wäre ein solches Signal empfangen worden. Die Haupthandlung des Romans umspannt über ein Jahrzehnt, letztlich aber - gerade auch auf den letzten Seiten - das ganze Leben der Protagonistin. Der Buchschluss hält mehrere Pointen bereit, die für große Überraschungen sorgen. Dieser Roman ist für alle geeignet, die sich für Science Fiction und philosophisch-religiöse Fragen interessieren. Fans von großen Raumschlachten werden diesbezüglich enttäuscht sein. Denn darum geht es in „Contact" nicht, sondern um die Stellung der Menschheit im Universum und um die Stellung des einzelnen Menschen in seiner Welt und Lebenswelt. Das sporadisch angesprochene Thema Naturwissenschaft & Glaube ist auf amerikanische Verhältnisse zugeschnitten und mutet teils wie eine Geduldsübung in Pluralismus an.
