First published in 1880, The boy's King Arthur was edited by the American poet Sidney Lanier from Sir Thomas Malory's history of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

This story of King Arthur was pared down for children, but it was still complicated and, frankly, boring, plus riddled with typos that could have easily been fixed with a good proofing. (

I told my parents I wanted the story of King Arthur with the wonderful illustrations, and this is what they got me. What I actually wanted was the Howard Pyle version which I bought for myself later., but the illustrations to this version are also excellent of their kind, blander than Pyle's but in full color. (

It befell in the days of the noble Utherpendragon, when he was King of England, [that there was born to him a son who in after time was King Arthur. Howbeit the boy knew not he was the king's son. For when he was but a babe] the king commanded two knights and two ladies to take the child bound in rich cloth of gold, "and deliver him to what poor man you meet at the postern gate of the castle."

"In this edition of Mr. Lanier's classic Boy's King Arthur omission has been made of some minor passages and introductory matter - all the greater tales, those of Arthur, Launcelot, Tristam, Gareth, Galahad, Percival, and the Holy Grail, being retained."

This version lacks the tale titled "La Cote Mal Taile" which is in the full King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table. Please don't combine the two.
