This book reminds me of my granda. she's the best seamstress in the whole world. When she comes to New Orleans we go to the Goodwill store and pick something with fabric we like and she turns it into the prettiest clothes.

A mysterious woman shows up in a drab, hard-working town and is hired to be the tailor. To make up for the drabness of the town, she embroiders elaborate scenes inside people’s pockets, opening their eyes to possibilities beyond their own dull existences.

A woman in an unfamiliar town takes on a job sewing. She wants to sew intricate designs and beautiful works but the people of the village told her, "We are plain folk." They did not want any of that. She was forced to wear plain white clothes. To cope with this the woman decided to sew a beautiful creation inside of her pockets for no one to see, except her. She begins to sew others' pockets with embroidaries which ends up transforming the village into a culture that desires color and culture. Themes of this book are centered around creativity, being yourself, and sharing your gifts with others. I would read this book for the purpose of exlaining these themes or I could use it to teach imagery. Armstrong uses a lot of imagery when writing about the embroidaries, so it would set a good example for students to follow. ( )
