I picked this up because pictures cannot be taken inside Windsor and it was slim enough not to add much to the weight of my luggage. While it is OK as a souvenir, Windsor Castle: A Thousand Years of a Royal Palace edited by Steven Brindle has the level of detail I really wanted and will probably find its way into my library. ( ) Having visited Windsor Castle in person on a recent trip to London you can find these books at any major historical or tourist site. The books make a great souvenir as they give a ton of historical information and in addition they are beautifully illustrated. You would reference this book many times as reminder of a great trip or great info for someone planning a trip to London. This was a very informative book. It helped me get through the castle areas that I wanted to see and had a wonderful set of pictures to take home as memorabilia. Well worth the money if you are going to the castle and even more so if you can't get to the there and still want to see some of the wonders of the castle. Most notable were the sections on the doll house and St George's Chapel. This is a substantial history from the Middle Ages to the present. The first part concerns the Medieval period, and then discusses kings and queens, from Charles II to Victoria who had a substantial impact on the building. The last chapter covers the 20th century. There are 111 color illustrations in the books. My one complaint is that some of these, particularly of whole rooms, seem to be rather small. Since they are frequently reproductions of paintings and sketches, it is difficult to believe that the originals are that tiny. The book includes an index and bibliography. Great choice for a look at this famous palace. After visiting Windsor Castle this June, I was delighted that the Queen was in residence. I purchased this book at their souvenir shop as a remembrance. The current edition of the guide includes a photograph of the wedding of The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. From the building of the castle to the restoration of the 1992 fire, you are taken through the time of the Norman period, the Medieval expansion, the Tudor Windsor era, and then to the present House of Windsor. With many drawings and photographs, you are shown public rooms, state apartments, semi-state apartments, gardens, and many paintings. The guide was very helpful in labelling my own photographs from the visit. If you are going to visit Windsor Castle or want to see how the other half lives, by all means purchase this delightful guide. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
