After Mr. Putter eats exactly twenty-one of Mrs. Teaberry's delicious pineapple jelly rolls, he ends up with a grumbling tummy--and a bad case of insomnia! A midnight stargazing stroll with Tabby seems to be just the cure. But could it be that Mr. Putter and Tabby aren't the only ones still wide awake? Mr. Putter and Tabby See the Stars is another adventure in this series that two lovable characters embark on together. A great transitional chapter book, this series is an engaging and enjoyable read for beginning readers. In my 2nd grade internship this semester, the students read this story during shared reading. I love the characters because they are believable. Students can invest time into these characters and become excited to read more about them in this series. The illustrations are modern and very expressive. By using the context clues, students can easily read and comprehend the plot. In this story, Mr. Putter ate too many jelly rolls and cannot fall asleep because of a stomach ache! Students will be able to relate to this enjoyable story about friendship and memories. The big idea of this story is about neighbors and friendship. Cynthia Rylant and Arthur Howard's, "Mr. Putter & Tabby See the Stars" reveals a wonderful short story with pictures for the beginning reader. This easy reader in the Mr. Putter & Tabby series tells a story of Mr. Putter visiting with his friend Mrs. Teaberry late at night under the stars. Mr. Putter cannot sleep because he has stuffed his belly with one too many homemade jelly rolls before bed. So he takes Tabby for a walk outside and has the good fortune of another run-in with Mrs. Teaberry and her dog Zeke. The next day Zeke is shown taking taking an invitation to Mr. Putter to enjoy more of Mrs. Teabearry's homemade jelly rolls. This easy reader is not specified for a specific reader level, although the length implies some knowledge of sentence and word recognition and formation. This book is perfect for readers with working knowledge of literacy under their belt.
