Quirky trending towards dark humor, perhaps gothic humor if that's a thing. Think of a product of Edward Gorey and The Far Side. Cultural rules have changed since published; so by modern standards some of the cartoons might be uncomfortable, unacceptable, even taboo. But, at the same time, there's nothing in terms of graphic language, violence, or sexual content and so in this way, it feels tame by today's standards The Adaams Family you may have seen on TV is a more family and advertiser-friendly version of this. By that I mean the humor is more suited to older teens/adults than for kids. I found my copy at a used bookstore and It's a keeper. A delightful collection of some of the best cartoons to come out of 20th century America. Some have racist elements regarding indigenous peoples, but nothing too terrible. I really enjoy the Addams Family cartoons and the other macabre illustrations which are similar in nature and content. This is definitely worth picking up and easily read in one sitting. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Like other collections, this covers a broad range of Addams' work for the 'New Yorker' and while some of my personal favorites are included, not everything aged well. Humor is subjective and volatile and an artist like Addams always pushed boundaries. However, there was a whole genre of "native" cartoons, that Addams and others contributed to, that gives off a level of macabre now that Addams perhaps wasn't intending but does reflect the attitudes of the time. You have to take the good with the bad with these old collections.
Many of my favorites here involved the Addams Family - the proud reading of Pugsley's report card and Wednesday happily hearing the dragon triumph over the prince and his lovely bride at bedtime - but gems like the patent salesman, the terrified theater of people looking over your shoulder, and others are just as brilliant today as they were in the 1950s and '60s.
