I'm between 2 and 3 stars. I'm sorry. But I feel like something that can be a pro wound up a con for me in this book.
The author writes in a lot of detail. I loved that in a book of hers I read previously, but it didn't work as well for me here.

I think maybe there was too much of the story devoted to the sisters in the past. I enjoyed that part of the story, but given how long the book was it sometimes felt like it could have been several stories.

We've got the very distant past: the mom's diaries.
The past: the sisters as teens/twenty somethings helping raise the baby together.
Current day: Maggie, the baby, now an adult is asked to read the diaries and help resolve an issue from the past.

I felt that mostly the characters meant well but sometimes they made some selfish decisions which made them hard to like. Really, all of them except Maggie. ( )

Mcinerney has an interesting writing style. Some of the conversations are incredibly witty and well suited to her breezy plots. A very good summer read. ( )

This book had another slow start. The interesting thing that I found as I read is that the family relationships are complicated, like real family relationships. The further I read in the book the more I tended to think that they are exaggerated. There is something missing from this book and I can't figure out what it is. It may be that the author is trying to have 7 main characters and isn't succeeding. Eliza is a very flat character and not realistic. Perhaps the amount of time the author has spent on Eliza is part of the description of how she wants us to think of Eliza? I think this book would have been more successful if she had used each characters voice for a different chapter. She does that a little bit, but I think it would be made the book better if she had done it more. Still it is entertaining. ( )

Characters were beautifully created, but I was disappointed by the ending ( )

It took me a while to get into the characters in this book but when I did I was keen to see how the story unfolded. I quite enjoyed this book. A good read. ( )
