Learn about your colors and animals all at once! It is very interesting, amazing facts, and cool facts about animal colors. My 2-year-old niece loves this book. ( )

This book can be used for a science class. It talks about animals, and why animals appear in certain colors. Many resources are included in this book that are useful as references for the students if they want to do further research. I would use this book for all ages in elementary school and I would introduce it in different ways according to mu students ages. ( )

“Living Color” by Steve Jenkins shows a series of different animals and their colors. Some animals change colors to camouflage themselves, while other animals stay the same color all the time. Each animals is categorized under a color and has a description of themselves. This would be a great book to introduce a science lesson about animals or their colors. ( )

Steve Jenkins uses colors to categorize and give reasons animals have particular colors. Each color gets two to four pages full of facts about why different animals are different colors, for example, the yellow mongoose's yellowish tan fur allows it to blend in with its surroundings. The art is very familiar if you have read other Steve Jenkins books, as he has his own style that is definitely recognizable. He uses different textures, papers, and fabrics to transform his illustrations into lifelike animals. ( )

Description:
This book shows the reader how creatures come in all colors. Their colors most likely help them to survive in some way. Jenkins goes through the colors red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and pink, showing the reader how various creatures' feathers, scales, shells, and skin help them to survive. The back of the book provides additional information on each creature, such as length, habitat, and diet.

Personal reaction:
The best part about this book is its attractive illustrations. Staying true to the title, this book is full of colorful images that give the reader an accurate idea of what each creature looks like. I think the organization of the creatures by color is inviting to young readers and the creatures are diverse. Although I might not use this book for a read-aloud, I would encourage my students to look at the book during independent reading time or to learn more about a specific creature.

Keywords/science topics:
adaptation, predator, prey, reproduction, habitat

A couple of uses:
- Borrow Jenkins' idea of organizing creatures by assigning your students an animal or insect of a specific color and having them complete a study on the creature. Students will need to provide an image of the creature, simple information such as diet, habitat, and geographical location, and then describe how the animal uses its scales, feathers, shells or skin to help it survive. After each student has completed their project, hang the finished pieces up on the wall in the order of the rainbow.
- Use the art in this book to show students how to create their creatures using collage
- Keep in your classroom library for children who are interested in animals. During a unit on adaptations, feature one animal a day from the book, sharing the picture and reading aloud the description. ( )
