' Sie belieben wohl zu scherzen, Mr. Feynman!'. Abenteuer eines neugierigen Physikers. von Richard Feynman (noise)
noise: Both Tony Bourdain and Richard Feynman have (had) an incredible knack for writing highly informative and page turning memoirs. If you've read one but not the other, you're in for a treat.

I guess this book was revolutionary because it shone on a light on the dining industry (and was pleasantly profane) but it definitely didn't blow my mind. ( )

Just OK, didn't think it was anything special. The parts describing the different jobs he's had and some of the different kitchens he's worked in are kinda interesting. And somewhat boring and repetitive. Nearly half the book is him describing how bad of a person/employee/co-worker he's been and justifying it with descriptions of everyone else around him who is also using drugs, stealing property, getting drunk on the job, etc. There are a few times he breaks up his story with an extended description of an overseas visit, which for me just meant I lost the thread of the story. He also tries to give some helpful advice to wanna-be chefs, but just comes off as condescending...a teacher he is certainly not. I think I've about had my fill of these professional chef books without finding one that is a really good story. ( )

Really great book. I recommend the audiobook version which was narrated by the author. ( )

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain describes the professional kitchens he has known and the unusual food he has eaten in this exposé of the high-end restaurant industry. I didn't care for his writing style (he uses a lot of free modifiers, which create very long sentences and get annoying after a while) and I couldn't relate to his culinary adventures, his neglect of his spouse, or his choice of friends, so this wasn't the book for me. Great books and great writers have a voice, something you hear in your head as you read. That is so true hear. I could hear Bourdain’s voice the entire time I was reading. That is a good thing. It means the words are real, they are the product of a creative mind, and they resonated with me. I really enjoyed the peak into his his kitchens operated and what a typical day might be like. I also loved his opinionated he is in the book. I guess it helped that I usually shared his opinion (see his take on vegans for instance) but even when I didn’t it was great to read someone actually taking a stance instead of trying to please everyone. This is one bitter, nasty, searing, hard-to-swallow piece of work. But if you can choke the thing down, youll (sic) probably wake up grinning in the middle of the night. Bourdain is a force of unruly nature, a lifelong misanthrope and currently the executive chef at the Brasserie Les Halles, whose clientele, now that this book is out, must be accounted among the more courageous diners in New York.
