It's 3,000 miles from the fields of glory, where Henry "Hank" Thompson once played California baseball, to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where the tenements are old, the rents are high, and the drunks are dirty. But now Hank is here, working as a bartender and taking care of a cat named Bud who is surely going to get him killed. It begins when Hank's neighbor Russ has to leave town in a rush and hands over Bud in a carrier. But it isn't until two Russians in tracksuits drag Hank over the bar at the joint where he works and beat him to a pulp that he starts to get the idea: Someone wants something from him. He just doesn't know what it is, where it is, or how to make them understand he doesn't have it.
An adrenaline-fueled rampage that never loses its essential believable humanity, and a perfect recommendation for a 20-something guy. Excellent and thoroughly enjoyable! ( )
This was mostly the main character getting the crap beat out of him, but I liked the overall style and I'll definitely read more by Charlie Huston. ( )
It did remind me a bit of the Clive Cussler books in that the hero is repeatedly brought near death, and somehow survives. I did like the fact that he kept making mistakes, gets caught. A couple of plot holes here and there. I will read another one as long as it gets better. ( )
Henry Thompson does not have much of a life to start with but it steamrolls downhill fast. This is a fast paced story told mostly in the first person present tense which made it really interesting. I'm going to be on the lookout for more of Huston's stories. ( )
