Pretty much a younger person’s book, but I loved this story. Did not put it down the second I picked it up. Very raw emotions and real fear. ( )

This book is about a young 15 year old boy named Charley Goddard who lies about his age to join the First Volunteers of Minnesota in the Civil War. The story depicts camp life and his service during the war. The book gives a solid look at how awful and tragic life was for the soldiers who served in this War. This book could be used in either a Language Arts or History class to explore the themes of the book and as an account of life from a soldiers point of view. ( )
