Che is a precocious young boy raised in isolated privilege by his New York grandmother. Yearning for his famous outlaw parents--radical 1960s activists who are now among the FBI's most wanted--he's denied all access to television and the news. But he takes hope from his long-haired teenage neighbor, who predicts, "They will come for you, man. They'll break you out of here." And one afternoon, the prediction appears to come true. Soon Che, too, is an outlaw, fleeing with the woman into the subway and pitched into a journey that leads them to a hippie commune in the jungles of tropical Australia. I have read several Peter Carey books and enjoyed them, but this was not my favorite. I suppose this was deliberate but it was so unbelievably stressful that at points I could only skim the pages because I was afraid of what was going to happen! For me, this was the literary equivalent of a ticking time bomb… not excellent bedtime reading. The ending was unexpected, but satisfying.

i didn't hate this book -- i didn't even dislike it -- but i didn't understand it at all. :( ( )

Carey writes like a tightrope walker. The risks he takes sentence to sentence, image to image would be reckless if he hadn't been doing it so well for so many books. He keeps pushing it and succeeding. A master at the height of his considerable powers. I love this guy. ( )

Not my favorite Peter Carey novel but great characters as always. ( )

A young boy goes on the run with the radical woman he supposes is his mother. The writing style pissed me off too much for me to continue reading this. Sometimes clarity is good! ( )

Novels narrated by children are nearly always flawed and tiresome. But Che is as convincing a child as any I have found in the pages of a book: beady as a boy scout; innocent and yet so knowing; brimming with watery nostalgia for states he has never even known.
