GR-7 It has been some time since I last read this book (original title: "To Every Man a Penny"), but I have read it several times in my life. I always thought it was a very special novel conveying insight and comfort for those of us who like me sometimes despair of life as it is. The novel tells the story of a simple French priest in the years from WWI to after WWII and how he gets through these stormy times. It is a touching story and it is touchingly told - it was more than once that I wept during reading the book. The priest loves his profession and his religion and his beliefs and yet there is one thing that puzzles and slightly angers him providing bothe the main theme and the title of the book: how in the biblicial story some people came early for work in the vineyard and some arrive later and same very late indeed - and how in the end every man received the same wages, the same penny. At the end of the book - and near the end of his life - the French priest finds an answer that satisfies him and consoles him. I liked the answer quite a lot, as well, for it seems wise (although my religion teacher in school said this was too simple an explanation in his view). I won´t tell you what the priest found out - look for yourself. To Every Man a Penny is a book definitely worth reading, I am sure you will like and cherish it. One of my all-time favourites!
