A baby in a stroller sleeps listening to loud city noises, from ten horns beeping to two motorbikes roaring, until awakened by the soft chirp of one sparrow.

City Lullaby is a song book and counting book spin off of the 12 days of Christmas. It is a fun book about all the noises you might here in the city. I would use this book in my classroom because of the rhyming and counting. This is suitable for grades K-2.

I thought this book was just okay. Maybe I'm just not as into poetry as I used to be (more like rhymes I guess). The urban setting was fun since most childrens books seem to be more of a rural farm setting or with lots of animals, so that part did seem refreshing in a way. I can see the way that the rhymes would appeal to kids and help teach counting. It could be good for a counting unit ( )

I found this counting book to be bright and wonderful! The images are brilliant and it gives kids who may not live in the city, a chance to understand what the hustle and bustle is like. I like how it teaches the kids how to count backwards when many of the counting books out there start from 1 and go up to 10. On some pages, the author includes everything that went with the previous numbers allowing the reader to remember what noises when with the various numbers. I wish they did this for every number! ( )

Since "Monday on the Mississippi" was not my favorite book by Singer, I decided to give her another try and I'm glad I did! "City Lullaby" was a very well written book. The rhyming in the book is great and the bright pages feel like you are in a city. This would be a good book to read aloud to a classroom especially if the children are not from a city because it will show different aspects to one.

This is a very fun counting book. Each illustration has so much going on and it is fun to find all the hidden little things in each picture. As the book counts backwards from 10 to one, it often repeats the counting phrases, encouraging the reader to remember what noisy sound went with each number.
