A woman holds the key to one man's destiny in this classic Regency romance from the legendary New York Times bestselling author.

Disinherited and disgraced, Reginald Davenport's prospects cried for a dire end. But fate has given him one last chance at redemption—by taking his rightful place as the heir of Strickland, his lost ancestral estate. Davenport knows his way around women, yet nothing prepares him for his shocking encounter with Lady Alys Weston.

Masquerading as a man in order to obtain a position as estate manager of Strickland, Alys fled a world filled with mistrust and betrayal. She was finished with men—until Strickland's restored owner awakens a passion she thought she would never feel. A passion that will doom or save them both . . . if only they can overcome their pasts . . .

This manages to speak honestly about alcohol addiction without that overwhelming the story. Reggie's change seemed believably lasting because it was something he did for himself and not for Alys. I was less convinced about how easily he managed to keep to it the second time, but I've never struggled with alcoholism so maybe that's how it happens for some people.

I really like Alys' character, how no-nonsense she was, but her "masquerading as a man" as described in the blurb is misleading. She does wear trousers to facilitate her work on the estate and she doesn't make her gender known to her employer before Reggie takes ownership, but on the estate she is definitely known as a woman. It was a tiny bit of a let-down that she wasn't in disguise, even though the rest of the story makes up for it.

Good ol' angst and insecurity, I wouldn't read historical romances without it. I ADORED Alys, related a lot too, except for her background. As the book's dedication indicates, it's a bit preachy about the AA approach to alcoholism, but while Reggie's journey to sobriety does dominate the tale, there is enough of Alys' struggle with her sense of self to balance it and make me like it. (3.5 stars) ( )

One of my all-time favorite romances. Picture-perfect.

Reginald Davenport has one last chance at redemption, he's drinking too much, but Strickland, his boyhood home, is returned to him. He's assured that the current estate manager A. E. Weston is extremely competent and he can live off the income. But Weston is Allie Weston hiding from her past, complete with the guardianship of three minors. Reginald, after a couple mishaps, becomes a reformed alcoholic. Allie realizes that she's an attractive woman and Reginald shows her how lovely she truly is.

A wonderful surprise ending when Allie's past catches up to her.

Themes: ugly duckling turning into swan, the transformation of an alcoholic into a highly desirable man, the three charming children

And a great happily ever after for all. ( )

Alys was an interesting character. A woman who doesn't fit into a stereotype. Skilled at many things but a victim of her own insecurities.
Reggie too was different. An alcoholic, someone who hardly made the effort.
The characters were good but somehow at the end of the book, I wasn't left with a WOW or a let me go try to read the rest of the series or anything. ( )
