It was spring, a magical season in Jordan, when the winter-browned hills and valleys turn green from the winter rains, and wild anemones spring from the earth like red polka dots. We were so young, yet we felt responsible for contributing our voices and energies to the call for social justice. My urban planning work in Tehran had exposed me to the social and cultural fabric of a major Middle Eastern Islamic country, and made me aware of a fundamental lack of understanding in the West, especially in the United States, of Middle Eastern culture and the Muslim faith. Distinguished guests—from Queen Elizabeth to the sultan of Brunei—would sometimes pass by a jumble of tricycles, bicycles, and prams on their way to the front door. We had just as much of a menagerie inside the house, where hamsters and gerbils kept escaping from their cages. While my husband released his nervous energy through smoking, I gave vent to mine, as I often did, by going through our accumulated possessions and culling out things we did not need. I found it liberating. Given the number of crises we had faced, my husband was fond of saying that pretty soon there would be nothing left for me to discard or rearrange. “It seems insane that men must enlist, fight, and be injured in order to communicate with the enemy on a human level,” my husband said to me... The only way to overcome the enmity of previous generations is to enable the next generation, the future guardians of peace, to meet and interact openly and honestly in a secure atmosphere of trust. It was impossible to ignore the fact that my husband was very popular in Israel; many Israelis told us that they would gladly exchange Hussein for Bibi. | |
