The Principles of Uncertainty is an irresistible invitation to experience life through the psyche of Maira Kalman, one of this country's most beloved artists. The result is a book that is part personal narrative, part documentary, part travelogue, part chapbook, and all Kalman. Her brilliant, whimsical paintings, ideas, and images--which initially appear random--ultimately form an intricately interconnected worldview, an idiosyncratic inner monologue. Kalman contends with some existential questions--What is identity? What is happiness? Why do we fight wars? And then, of course, death, love, and candy (not necessarily in that order).… (mehr)

This book passed through my hands at the library today, and I had to bring it home. I read it straight through. Totally charming, philosophical, whimsical, and grounded. Maira Kalman's writing, paintings, photographs, needlepoint, and indexing and categorizing all come together to express what I feel is a good outlook on life. ( )

Maira Kalman and I should be friends. If I lived in Manhattan I'm certain she would invite me over for Sunday afternoon tea. I would wear a fabulous hat.

Charming, off-beat, and surprising—and that's just the writing. Add the paintings and, well, there you are: Perfection. That is, perfection in the way a just-right cup of tea goes with fresh homemade bread and butter. Nourishment for the soul. ( )

I fell in love with this gorgeous weighty book the moment I picked it up at the library, and fell even further when I read it yesterday. This is one I have to own. Kalman's fun, honest prose paired with her exquisite art makes me well up with joy and awe. ( )

I'm totally wowed by this book. A very quick read, but as I was reading I felt a smile growing on my face. Fascinating artwork. A quirky upbeat look at life. Completely unlike anything I've read before. So original and creative! I really enjoyed it a lot. Handed it immediately to my husband and said, "You must read this!" I'm off to find And the Pursuit of Happiness! ( )

Wow, this book took an epicly long time to finish. It's kind of like visual poetry to me - I could never read too much in one sitting. It's the kind of book I like to visit with. Will definitely reread here and there, or just open a few pages and enjoy them. ( )
