[The Song of the Lark] is about a young woman, Thea Kronberg, growing up in the West who is a talented musician with dreams of success. She'll have to leave her town of Moonstone to be in the spotlight. She moves to Chicago and ultimately to Europe, but is still drawn to the beauty of the American West. The book is a portrait of an ambitious artist and the ups and downs of that sort of life.

I enjoyed this. I thought that Cather did a really good job exploring what it's like to learn a craft like being a successful professional musician. I found it much more realistic than other books I've read on this subject. I also liked that it wasn't overdramatic - this isn't a [[Thomas Hardy]] novel where everyone fails and/or dies. There's some sadness and nostalgia and typical life questions about whether chosen paths were really the best. But in the end, Cather does what I think is harder to write - creates a character with great depth and subtlety.

I don't think this novel stands out for me as much as [My Antonia] or [O, Pioneers], but I would recommend if you enjoy Cather and haven't read this yet. ( )

Not one of her better known books but I think it is right up there with O Pioneers and My Antonia. I love Willa Cather. ( )

"You can't try to do things right and not despise the people who do them wrong."

The story of a young girl who parties on the Mexican side of town in Colorado and grows up to become a true diva.

If only she saw the look on Spanish Johnny's face at the end... ( )

New lady crush: activated. Cather has written a beautifully compelling Kunstlerroman (coming of age of the artist, in layman's terms) that is also deeply unsentimental and blunt. I cannot recommend it enough. ( )

A complex character study of the glorified American Dream being achieved by an ambitious woman through luck, perseverance, pragmatism, and talent, with the biggest drawcard the beautiful lush descriptions of the land and the scenery.

There's a lack of the usual over-fictionalised transcendental and obsessive euphoria that is usually associated when writing about (musical) talents. Instead, there's deliberate diversions of reality: of poverty, of the very real chance of failure, of the petty jealousies and anger at the simple populace for popularising what would appear to the uber-professionals as mediocrity - even if the novel insists that the reason Thea is mad about the less-talented popular acts is due to her lofty standards about artistry. Music here really just serves as the superficial catalyst for Thea's upward trajectory, but with no real feeling.

In fact, the story is less about musical talent and ability than the vitality of life in a strong-minded independent young woman yearning for a life bigger than what her picturesque yet suffocatingly small-living town can give. Yet, in what is perhaps at telling indication of the times, her determined drive to success was really only fueled and aided by the men who believed - or needed to believe that their own life's purpose is to help Thea succeed in order to placate their own average adequacies -, and (sometimes inappropriately, I mean, has it really always been acceptable for 30something-year-olds to plan their future marriage to a current 12-year-old?) loved her. By contrast, the women who believed in her could not materially help her and as such is mostly cut off from her journeys.

Beyond her dour persistence and brief moments of happiness in nature and physical exertions, I feel like Thea's real personality remain hidden from the reader even as she achieves success - that her sentimentality for the land of her childhood, doesn't extend to sentimentality for people nor really for the music that she so holds upon a pedestal. But I also feel that that is the theme across Cather's prairie trilogy, less individual-focused and more a celebration of the archetypal personalities born of the Scandinavian immigrants on the Great Plains.
