Pt. 1 (pp. 11-42) contains a short history of the Theresienstadt ghetto, and describes Jewish self-administration, living conditions, and cultural activities. Ch. 2 (pp. 45-336) contains a daily chronicle of the ghetto based on records from diaries by the inmates Egon Redlich, Philipp Manes, Ružena Weinbergerová, Arnošt Klein, Hana Platovská, and Willi Mahler. Pt. 3 (pp. 339-356) describes events after the last deportation from Theresienstadt in October 1944, including the liberation and repatriation, as reflected in memoirs by Elsa Bernstein, a diary by Erna Popper, and an essay written by the former Red Army doctor Yevgeniya Fizdel, who took part in the liberation of the ghetto. Pt. 4 (pp. 359-388) contain excerpts from diaries by the artists Vera Segerová, who died in 1943; Maria Klanová (Kleinová) who survived; and Hana Anderová (Steindlerová), as well as excerpts from Makarová's interview with Anderová.
