In STRAWGIRL, Bo Bradley, a social worker employed as an investigator for the San Diego Children’s Protective Services Department is asked “Why do you risk so much? What makes you do what you do?” That is a question many people may ask themselves. Her response, “Who knows....I have risk built into my chemistry. Any day may bring fears beyond anything real life can produce. It provides a somewhat larger perspective, maybe. Or it may be a pitiable adolescent need to defy authority.” The Strawgirl refers to Samantha, a murdered three-year-old girl who had been raped and a mask drawn on her abdomen. An anti-cult hysteria, fueled by a prominent speaker warning about Satanism, has inflamed the area and her father, a member of a little-known group, quickly becomes the main suspect. After Samantha’s sister, Hannah, disappears, probably kidnapped by their father, Bo tries to locate them and determine the facts of the brutal murder. One person she meets, Eva Broussard, the member of the Iroquois tribe and a psychologist, becomes instrumental in helping solve the crime as well as helping Bo deal with her bi-polar disorder. Abigail Padgett has created realistic characters who act in realistic ways. She exposes the dangers faced by people who may be different from society norms and how that society can be more dangerous because of its own unrealistic fears and its willingness to jump to erroneous conclusions. This is the second in the Bo Bradley mystery series. Bo Bradley is a worker with the Child Protective Services. As such, the mysteries revolve around child abuse and death--a very hard topic to read about. However Bo Bradley is also bipolar. And, in my experience, she gives a pretty realistic view of this disorder. There is also at least one strong Native American character in the two books I have read so far. In Strawgirl Bo Bradley investigates a case of child abuse and murder. She must weave her way through the media onslaught which is decrying the murder as Satanic activity. She must also protect the dead child's sister both from the predator, and from the CPS bureaucracy which sometimes seems more focused on following rules than the mental health of the child. There was an odd bit of deja vu when Bo Bradley hides from the bad guy in a cave until help arrives. This scenario also occurred in the first book in the series. Nevertheless, even with its faults, I saw myself in Bo's loved ones who are annoyingly hypervigilant about scanning her for symptoms of mania. I will continue to read this series for its depiction of bipolar and its portrayal of a strong protragonist dealing successfully with mental illness. "Three-year-old Samantha Franer is dead of internal injuries brought on by rape. Worse yet, an eerie symbol - the spiked face of a straw-like man - has been painted on her abdomen. All fingers of guilt point at the child's stepfather, Paul Massieu, known member of an obscure cult based in New York State." "Pompous pediatricians, presumptive police, and an eager press cry "satanism." Bo knows better. She has long ago learned to heed her heightened perceptions and her own intuition. This time they tell her that this is no case of ritual abuse." "Then the victim's sister vanishes, undoubtedly kidnapped by Massieu, and Bo is placed on the case. Tracking eight-year-old Hannah Franer leads her to the misty hills of New York's Hudson Valley and the cult's "hideout." But Bo sees no evil here, a feeling underscored by the cult leader, an Iroquois mystic who is as wise as she is ageless. Two other things Bo senses strongly: Paul Massieu is not guilty; and only the truth can free young Hannah from the psychic torment that could destroy her." "Following her instincts, Bo vows to uncover the real monster and save the lives of future victims. It is a desperate search that will lead Bo into the deepest recesses of the mind and the darkest caverns of the earth. And it will place her livelihood - and her life - in dire jeopardy."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
