A monumental catalogue of all hitherto identified British and Irish authors of Latin works between the 5th century and the beginning of the English Renaissance. British and Irish writers who spent their careers on the continent of Europe, continental writers whose careers brought them to Britain or Ireland, and writers who worked under Anglo-Norman rulers in France all find their place. Comprising well over 2,000 entries, the Handlist embraces virtually every kind of writing, including theological, philosophical, scientific, political, and historical works, poems, grammatical treatises, and letters of a literary kind. The emphasis is bibliographical rather than biographical, and the aim is to enable the reader easily to discover what an author wrote and where copies may be found.
