This is a pretty good book to read to children who are learning to count. It is a nursery rhyme too, so it is easy and fun for young kids to sing the song that goes with it. I remember listening to story times of this book, so I have good memories about it. ( )

Very animated and fun, one of our children's favorite counting rhymes. For some reason, the idea of the doctor getting more and more frustrated by the monkeys sent my children into hysterics. ( )

“Ten little monkey jumping on the bed, one fell off and bumped his head. Mother called the doctor and the doctor said, ‘No more monkeys jumping on the bed!’”

The well-known children's nursery rhyme uses repetition to help young readers learn sequence and numbers as they count the monkeys who fall off the bed. This oversized book, the Child’s Play version, has die-cut circles that encourage the child to interact with the brightly-colored illustrations as well as with the words.

Young readers are sure to enjoy singing the song and seeing how the mother and the doctor react as another monkey falls off the bed.

Recommended. ( )

This story contains a lot of rhyme and melodic repetition, which classifies it as a Nursery Rhyme. On top of that, it has cut-out holes that help transmit images from one page to the next. That also gives it characteristics of a toy book by adding extra fun features of interest to provide the reader with a positive association with reading. According to Scholastic, this story has a readability level of PreK-K. In the book, a mother warns her 10 monkey children to not jump on the bed, but they continue to do so. They fall off and hurt themselves one by one, so they need to see the doctor. The book counts backwards from 10 and allows for opportunities for the child to count the monkeys, which would help with the concept of counting. That is likely how I would use this book in the classroom. I would have students the number of monkeys jumping on the bed in the pictures to see if it matched up with the number written in the text. That will help students with their counting abilities and to understand that pictures and the text support one another in a story. The repetitive theme will help students take part in the story. I think I would have the students predict what came next by allowing them to say the "NO MORE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED" part. All in all, I think this is a fun book for young children that has a lot of potential for creative activities in the art, music, and movement realms. ( )
