True stories of the lives of American slaves as told in the actual words of the former slaves themselves. Their words have not been rewritten, but appear exactly as they dictated them during interviews in the 1930s. Thousands of ex-slaves gave details about their own auctions, forced breeding, lives of masters, slaves' secrets, & much more. Includes photographs of working slaves, slave cabins, master's houses, former slaves. Includes dialect glossary since most of these autobiographies are in the ex-slaves' Southern vernacular. (Weuns wuz wukked so hard. Iffen weuns failed, 'twas de bullwhip.) These first-hand accounts are very important in any study of American history, including the Civil War. While a few of the stories have appeared in print elsewhere, I WAS A SLAVE is the only extensively researched & categorized publication of these narratives that exists anywhere. Each chapter (such as runaways or mulattoes) is a separately published book. Every book's title is I WAS A SLAVE & each book has its own subtitle, for example: I WAS A SLAVE: Book 1: Descriptions of Plantation Life (1-886766-00-2). Also now available are: Book 2: The Lives of Slave Men (1-886766-01-0); Book 3: The Lives of Slave Women (1-886766-02-9); Book 4: The Breeding of Slaves (1-886766-03-7) & Book 5: The Lives of Slave Children (1-86766-05-3), & Book 6: Slave Auctions (1-886766-06-1). When completed, there will be 24 books (being published one at a time) in the I WAS A SLAVE Book Collection. Each book is $5.95 retail. To order, send $7.50 (includes P & H) for any one book plus $6.50 for each additional book mailed at the same time. (Bookstore discount for 15 or more books is 40% off retail plus RPS.).
