Still had some parts with excessive explanations but much better than the first few books. Not too much moaning and complaining about his girlfriend. ( ) I enjoyed this story! Ramage is sent after a ship that the crew had mutinied & taken it to the Spanish Main. The captain who had previously been in charge of blockading Martinique (Ramage's Diamond) had been sent to get it back but failed. It was considered impossible, but so are most of Ramage's assignments! Very hard to put down toward the end. The book is a quick and easy read but the story is not very interesting for me. It is not a bad book but it is quite predictable with an overly amount of recap on basically each character in the Ramage crew. Reading these books in order as I am doing, I know all this back story quite well and I want some intrigue, some tension and there is little of that despite the nature of the story. Capturing a frigate from under the nose of some 160 cannon in an impregnable lagoon at the cost of only 5 of his crew killed is a bit of a stretch to the imagination. I liked the ending though...a little touch of humour. Overall it was an easy read that was disappointing only that the story could have been stronger in my opinion. With his newly assigned frigate, Calypso, Ramage is sent on another ugly mission to cut out or destroy a mutinous ship now in the hands of the Spanish. Excellent series, sometimes based upon actual events. Always a good story with interesting characters, puzzling quandaries and sometimes quirky solutions. Age of sail tyros should read early in their literary questing for his knowledge and insights into fighting, sailing and British Navy life during these quite fascinating times. Many set in the Caribbean where Pope lived for most of his writing career enabling him to provide very helpful maps, not often found in fiction, for his scenarios. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
