This immense compilation gives one page to each photographer represented with a short paragraph and one image well reproduced (both color and black and white as most representative. Those included are chose broadly from the history of photography and its international activity.

Is it strange to put this as a book I'm reading? Well, no...I guess not. You see, for each quintessential photograph picked by photographers ranging from quite famous (Henri Cartier Bresson to more obscure ones), there is a description of why the photo is important, the circumstances of it, and a bit about the photographer her or himself. I probably wouldn't have picked up the monstrosity had I not found it used at Myopic Books for twenty bucks. It's arranged alphabetically and I'm proud to say that even though I'm reading other things, packing, and often found at funerals these days, I am up to letter D!

"The photography book" bevat 500 foto's van 500 verschillende fotografen op een flink formaat afgedrukt, steeds van een kort bijschrift voorzien. Al mijn favoriete fotografen zitten er tussen, hoewel niet allemaal met de foto die ik zou kiezen:
- Ansel Adams met een prachtig berglandschap
- Henri Cartier-Bresson met een foto die zijn theorie van het beslissende moment mooi illustreert, niet mijn favoriete foto van hem
- Edward S. Curtis met een portretfoto van een Indiaanse vrouw
- David Doubilet met een onderwaterfoto
- Ed van der Elsken met een foto uit zijn boek over Parijs
- Frank Hurley met de Endurance bij nacht
- Youssuf Karsh met Churchill
- Carl de Keyzer met een auto met lachende en zwaaiende mensen
- Dorothea Lange met een gemigreerde arbeidster
- Frans Lanting met een helling vol Ara's
- Jacques-Henri Lartigue met een strandfoto
- Annie Leibovitz met een prachtig portret van Keith Haring
- Steve McCurry met een landschap in ondergaande zon
- Lennart Nilsson met een foetus van 3 maanden oud

Dit zijn allemaal fotografen van wie ik 1 of meer boeken heb. Andere fotografen wiens foto ik erg mooi vind zijn: Werner Bisschof, Margaret Bourke-White, Brassaï, Rene Burri, Harry Callahan, Elliot Erwitt, Philippe Halsman, Lewis Hine, Jacob Molenhout (een Nederlandse fotograaf waar ik nog nooit van had gehoord) en Norman Parkinson.
Zoals gebruikelijk bij een overzichtswerk spreken een aantal foto's me erg aan, en een aantal veel minder. In zijn totaliteit zorgt het boek voor uren kijkplezier. ( )
