Hoffman calls us to join in the "song of the earth". She presents the rich world of ideas and images connected to the "four elements" of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. In the name of "progress", we have poisoned the Earth, polluted the Water, used Fire to lay waste. Be recapturing our sense of wonder, getting in touch with the elements, perhaps we will "try harder" to keep the planet clean.

So appropriate to see this geared for "children" and the youthful imagination. I am reminded of G. Bachelard's demonstration that the formative processes of verbal symbolization seem to target nature -- especially those dealing with air, water, earth and fire. Our most aggressive impulses, our drive to subdue and mutilate, could be "caught" early on. If only we can "discover" that the real treasure is the "discovery". This book is on that bejeweled path.
