Nightingale's Lament is book three in Simon R. Green's Nightside series. This time private investigator John Taylor gets to investigate who is sabotaging Prometheus, Inc. [Incorporated], the Nightside's only reliable source of electricity. (The other sources mentioned sound pretty unsafe.) The company supplies 12.4% of the power in the Nightside. 40 people have vanished already and not even magic cameras are catching anything. No wonder the security guards are spooked.

The heroes of Simon R. Green books often deal with one case before an even worse one, the main plot, begins. This book is no exception.

NOTES:

Chapter 1:

a. See book two, Agents of Light and Darkness, for the case of the Unholy Grail.

b. John was the bride's oldest friend at the wedding of Melinda Dusk, the Hanged Man's Beautiful Daughter to Quinn the Sunslinger. Their families had been feuding for centuries. They were murdered the day they were married six years ago. Vincent 'The Mechanic' Kraemer, who owns and manages Prometheus, Inc., was the best man.

Chapter 2:

a. According to his secretary, Cathy Barrett (who usually drinks 'champers'), John drinks wormwood brandy only when he's lost someone close to him. According to John, it takes like a supermodel's tears.

Mentions: the Beehive's 'Honey Lingers', phrenology,

These are short, easy, reads. I read them in between heavier stories. The writing isn't the best, but it keeps me entertained and he's consistent. That's all I ever ask for in my fluff reading! ( )

Nothing earth-shattering, but fun and entertaining to read. Interesting world building. ( )

One of my least favorite books of the series. I just wasn't that interested in the overall story. The one redeeming aspect of it, however, is the introduction of the awesome Dead Boy. He's in my top 3 favorite characters of the series. ( )

Really 3.5--always a fun romp with John Taylor in the Nightside! Fun characters and story in the style if a private eye novel. ( )

My name is John Taylor. I've made that a name to be respected and feared, but it's also made me a target my whole life.

I operate as a private eye, in a world where gods and monsters are real. The Nightside: the sick, the secret magical heart of London. A place where dreams come true, whether you want them to or not. It's not easy to find a way in, and even harder to find a way out.

I can find anything, solve any mystery. Except the answers to the dark and deadly secrets to my own past.

My name is John Taylor. And if you've come looking for me, either you're in trouble, or you're about to be.

There are all kinds of Powers running loose in the Nightside, but its power sources have to be rather more reliable, as well as completely divorced from outside interference.
