This book is based on the Texas cattle drive that took place after the Civil War. It is told by a jack rabbit with a strong Texas accent. He tells of the obstacles that the cowboys often faced. They were forced to move their cattle through flooding rivers, fierce dust storms, and scary thunderstorms. Although the trail drives were long and hard, and the pay was low, the cowboys loved their way of life.

I am very interested in learning about the cattle drives. This book was interesting and funny, due to the accent of Texas Jack, the jack rabbit. There is a museum in Duncan, Oklahoma that is all about the cattle drives. It is a great experience for children and adults alike.

I would love to use this book in class when teaching a lesson on the history of the cattle drive. I would ask the students to close their eyes and use their imagination while I described what it was like to ride the trails. I would also point out the words and phrases that the jack rabbit uses to talk about how people from different parts of the United States talk.
