South's story is tightly written. French Leave is part of a series, and while this is the only installment I have read, the story stood on its own.
The crux of my problem with this story is that I have been a fan of Georgette Heyer's Georgian & Regency novels for years. Perhaps if I was less familiar with Heyer's work I would have liked French Leave better. Throughout the novel I was reminded of several Heyer books, but especially These Old Shades, Friday's Child, Devil's Cub, and The Civil Contract. Situations throughout French Leave echo situations in these novels so strongly that I had some difficulty staying motivated to finish it. I recommend going to the source and savoring the exceptional Georgette Heyer novels mentioned above. South's novel was good, but pales in comparison to Heyer’s treatment of similar scenarios. ( )
