A bunch of ideas are running around in Don Everts's head. Some are permanent residents. Others are visitors, just passing through. When they all get together, some odd things start happening. It's one thing when the idea Girls Are Kind of Icky gets challenged by Girls Can Be Pretty Darned Interesting. But it gets more complicated when The Old Man Clutching the Big Black Bible meets Higher Criticism. Or when You Are Not Lovable tries to drown out the voice of God Loves You. In this tour of Don's head, we get a glimpse of how we make sense of ideas and how we decide which ones should live with us. We're introduced to Back Door Ideas like Pain Is Bad, Secret Ideas like Lighter Skin Implies Higher Intelligence and Sexy Ideas like Shiny Happy Globalization. How do we determine what ideas win out? Which ideas should get to stay, and who should get kicked out of the house? Here is a book that will help you make sense of the competing ideas you have about life and the world we live in. Everts purpose here is to provide an extended metaphor to help his readers "think about thinking." Everts describes his head as something of a guesthouse, with a large living room for lively "house meetings" in which ideas interact. Some ideas find a home in Everts' head, others are kicked to curb, and others keep sneaking in through an open window in the kitchen. We meet characters like "The Old Man Clutching the Big Black Bible" and "Blessed Sloppyman," or the "Brilliance of Collaboration" and "Conflict is Always horrible." Everts describes how ideas interact in this mental house, how new ideas are welcomed (or not), and different types of thoughts (e.g. permanent residents, sugar ideas, pointy ideas, back door ideas). While it's a clever metaphor for "thinking about thinking," it seems Everts could have developed this a bit more carefully. C+ ( )
