Helene Cooper's crisp writing allows the reader to understand complex situations. ( ![]() One of the best books I've ever read. Not kidding. This is an excellent memoir/autobiography, relating a multi-generational history of Liberia and the lives of some of the descendants of the founding families that established Liberia as a modern state, through the lens of the author, who was a child when a coup overthrew the government and launched a 13 year long series of civil wars that turned a peaceful, rather modern corner of Africa into a poverty-stricken war zone run by warlords and their machete-wielding child armies. An excellent book, and a memoir. I learned so much about Liberia and events that happened in my early 20s there, that I knew nothing about. The author is an excellent writer and kept me engrossed for the whole book. I highly recommend this book. An excellent book, and a memoir.
