International best-selling author of "The Gospel According to Peanuts" and "The Parables of Peanuts" Robert Short here takes his readers on an engaging adventure into the spirituality of the stories of beloved children's book author Theodor 'Dr. Seuss' Geisel -- and, in doing so, reveals Seuss to be "a first-class Christian thinker." NCLA Review - So you thought Dr. Seuss was only for children? Think again, says author Robert L. Short, who in this small book compares your favorite Seuss stories with some of the deep themes of the Bible. Short takes excerpts from 11 stories and parallels them with texts primarily drawn from Paul and the Gospels. In one chapter he does a back and forth dialogue using lines from The Cat in the Hat and direct quotes from scripture. Unfortunately, some of Short’s comparisons feel like a stretch while others are insightful. The writing is choppy and the content is a litany of points rather than a flowing story. I also wish the publishers had gone to the trouble to develop a more pleasing layout. How can you write about Dr. Seuss and not get permission to reprint some of the wonderful images from his books? In the end, I found the book visually and intellectually boring. Rating: 1—NSK Zeige 3 von 3 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
This breezy and engaging book will delight the Dr. Seuss fan in all of us. Robert Short looks at spirituality in the stories of children's book author and illustrator Theodore "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, arguing that Geisel was "a first-class Christian thinker." The book explores Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and others. Short writes in the introduction, "When I first became acquainted with his books and was struck by the many parallels I saw between his work and what is said in the Bible and by Christian faith, I considered these similarities to be merely 'happy accidents.' Today I still see these parallels as 'happy,' but I'm now convinced that they are not merely 'accidents.'" Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
