The story reads a bit like one of Aldous Huxleys less admired works, with exaggerated and often farcical characters, long suffering protagonist, and plot in which nothing in particular happens. It is also set in a similar period and written in a reminiscent style, while oscillating throughout from more overtly humorous than Huxley's novels to more predictable. While it may be quite on a par with the likes of “After Many a Summer”, it certainly isn't fair to compare it to Ulysses; the book probably would appeal to fans of Huxley, though not to those who like their fiction on the more literary side of literary. I could imagine the story being used for a television film, not necessaraily the sort they show at the cinema, but the sort that might be aired during an afternoon, watched by people who are not particulary watching, and laughed at for its comedy sketch like scenarios, with the plot being all but irrelevant. That isn't to say it's a badly written book, it never quite descends to the level of genre fiction, and I was surprised by how pleasing the ending was. It may sound as if I've been critical of the book, but I probably would read another book by this author if I came across one in the future. ( )
