Among the fifty-eight regiments of Zouaves and the seven regiments of Lancers enlisted in the service of the United States between 1861 and 1865 it will be useless for the reader to look for any record of the 3d Zouaves or of the 8th Lancers. The red breeches and red fezzes of the Zouaves clothed many a dead man on Southern battlefields; the scarlet swallow-tailed pennon of the Lancers fluttered from many a lance-tip beyond the Potomac; the histories of these sixty-five regiments are known. But no history of the 3d Zouaves or of the 8th Lancers has ever been written save in this narrative; and historians and veterans would seek in vain for any records of these two regiments -- regiments which might have been, but never were. When I first read this book many years ago, I was fascinated by the different regiments listed which were fictitious, but based on fact. Most interesting were the Zouaves, their costume based on oriental regiments, and the Lancers, who were cavalry with lances as their only weapon.
I was annoyed at the accents used for Southerner Celia and some of the lower class persons in the book. It detracted from the flow of the story and could have been eliminated. Also there were long passages consisting of letters written to characters which interrupted the story for a modern reader. And, like a Broadway musical, the dialogue sometimes shifted into poetry for no apparent reason. There were times that the actions of the characters didn’t make a lot of sense and there were too many co-incidences; however that may be because the book was written more than 100 years ago with differing standards for popular fiction.
I have a first edition with the date inscribed by a relative in 1910. This edition has 8 black and white plates of illustration. The Zouave costume, the nurse’s uniforms and other clothing is detailed. But I got the feeling of the early 20th century in men’s dress clothing as well as the women’s hairstyles, confirming that historical costume has basis in the year that the illustration or movie has occurred.
All in all, this is an enjoyable book and, being out of copyright, is freely available on the internet for all to read. ( )
