The Queen of Air and Darkness: A very nice genre-bending piece of work. It creates a very faerie atmosphere, but also develops interesting ideas about humans adapting to conditions on other habitable planets. This story was awarded the Hugo Award for best short fiction and the Nebula Award for best novelette, 1972.
No Truce With Kings: This is a science fiction war story set in a post-apocalyptic North America. Enjoyable, although the anti-paternalistic sentiment is a little overblown. Won the Hugo for best short fiction, 1964.
The Longest Voyage: This story combines some ideas in the previous two (although it was written earlier); human life on a planet quite different from the Earth, and paternalism by advanced cultures towards those less advanced. I quite enjoy the dialect used. Won the Hugo for best short fiction, 1961.
The man who came early: Perhaps a strange choice for inclusion, this one, because as far as I can tell the only award it has received is scoring number 53 all-time novelette in the 1999 Locus Readers Poll. It is a time-travel story and and exists mostly to make a point about the conventions of time-travel stories. Short and enjoyable. ( )
