I am loving this book and have fantasies about teaching a class using this as a textbook. It's like opening a time capsule from 1997 with wonderful surprises inside, such as the very first computer mouse and the views of computers in the 1940s, 1980s, and 1997. To put this book in some context - google.com and "blog" didn't even appear until a few months after this book was published, which makes his points about visual metaphor in the modern interface even more interesting, i think. Awesome little trip through interface history with several asides to Victorian literature and MTV thrown in along the way. ( )

One of very few examples aimed at exploring a critic’s possible position in interaction design. Johnson addresses topics such as links and hypertext, multiple windows, and the desktop metaphor and manages to provide knowledge that is evidently useful to designers as well as other parties in the knowledge community. This makes the book a valuable and prescient example of what interaction criticism could be like.

The way Foster's software could trace who Shakespeare played in his plays was pretty neat. ( )

In Interface Culture: How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and Communicate, Johnson, a founding editor of the influential Webzine FEED, expands on the practical and metaphorical ramifications of the computer interface as no one before him has ever, to my knowledge, thought to do.
