The book is set up in a true/false format with the reader seeing the question on one page and then being able to flip to the next to see the answer. If it is true then it goes into more detail regarding the question and if it is false it gives the reader the right answer along with the correct information. This book also had an index that can be used by the reader to look up specific topics covered in the book. I loved the format of this book! The questions were set up in a straightforward and easy way that children will find appealing. The book provides young readers with immediate results with amazing photos to expand on their new-found knowledge. There were also some great "did you know" facts that were very interesting. This lesson could be used as an extension activity on a butterfly life cycle unit that could be used individually or in a small group setting. It could also be used as a learning journal for children to write down their five favorite newly discovered facts to share with the rest of the class. I liked the book because placing the statement on the page before the fact allows you to think about whether the answer is true or false.
As you read the statements, have students tell you whether they are true or false. Flip the page, read about it, and have students write the answer. Let students look at a real butterfly and caterpillar and ask them to confirm the facts that they have just learned by comparing the facts that they wrote down to the real butterfly and caterpillar.
Teach vocabulary relative to butterflies and caterpillars. Have students use the index to locate facts about butterflies and caterpillars. Have students write about butterflies and caterpillars. They should introduce them, use facts to develop their points, and conclude their paper. ( )
