Jack is still on the run! With Gary. And one of the Page sisters? And himself/John]> of Fables?

This time around, we find out far more (weird) backstory on the Fables Universe--including more backstory on exactly what Mr. Revise is and why Gary (the Pathetic Fallacy) does what he does.

Quite a crazy story. I wonder if this will have any implications on the mainline Fables stories?

Crazy scenes and spoilers:

Man, he could totally Flintstones a car couldn't he. But he's also not wrong about Jack.

That... did not go where I expected it to go.

You know, I really like this. He's spent so long putting himself in all of the stories and now the universe is apparently trying to appease him. But he can't be King Arthur--we already have Flycatcher--so instead? The stone. Because of course.

Wait. What? What is Gary exactly? The Metastory?

Heh. Jack has a history of just doing what he thinks should work and expecting the universe will go along with it... and for now the universe is actually listening to him.

The short asides from Babe the Blue Ox, Philosopher are bizarre and kind of hilarious.

Making a deal with the devil is a common trope, but selling that over and over again to more and more devils is even better. A fun idea. ( )

Apparently our Jack of Fables is nothing but a cheap knock-off. He was created due to his original (John, who became Wicked John after he escaped from Hell) being killed, and the master storyteller's need for another trickster character asap. I'm sure in the actual stories there was the duplication of some names, as these are more fluid storytelling elements than events and large themes, so I'm sure that this is what Willingham has used as his starting point. But even after Jack and John become two separate beings, with no more shared memories, they still wind up having many of the same personality characteristics. They're both womanizers, they're both money hungry, they both end up collecting sidekicks of some sort, and they both end up conversing with (the) devil(s). Pretty sure that Jack's ongoing deals are going to get him into some brimstone heated water soon, since it looks like his latest deal is almost up, and he hasn't yet found another buyer for his soul. Oops, I read this out of order - I thought I'd read volume two, but hadn't. I realized it about three pages in, but read this volume anyway :) I may re-read this volume once I've read volume 2. This was a fun read, despite missing some of the intervening story. ( )

Not a series I've followed. Illustration is middle of the road and story line is absurd. Even for a graphic novel ( )

This was my least favorite of the Jack volumes so far or perhaps it is just time for me take a break from him and reconnect with the other fables. In this tale Jack and those he is travelling with manage to fall into the Grand Canyon and Jack gets a sword through his chest.

Jack does make an astonishing discovery about the connection between himself and Wicked John. He also tells of the time when he was Jack O’Lantern and how he’s made a few deals with devils over the years. Meanwhile we also find out more about Mr. Revise and his connection to all of the fables.

We leave Jack still travelling with Gary and still scheming as to how to make life great for Jack. And by that he means lots of wine, women and money. ( )
