The book offers up close pictures of the bee’s body, the wax it makes, and honey it produces. It is mainly a picture book but it begins with acquainting the reader with the bee’s body then reveals the process of the bee flying from the flower to the hive where they make waxy honeycombs in which to store their honey. I thought the book is very simple but perfect for very young children. Older children might be bored with the sparse information. However, it might be a really good introduction to a bee unit. I loved the zoomed in photos. I figure a lot of children are too scared to have ever seen a bee close enough to count its legs or wings much less the hair on its legs. Classroom Extension Ideas: 1. For older children, do some more research on the anatomy of the bee and then have them draw a bee based on what they have learned. 2. Do a tasting or cooking activity based on the use of honey. You can let them simply taste organic honey (with the honeycomb in the jar) or cook different items using honey as the main ingredient. Honey muffins are a good example.
