What would you do if you were a few months from collecting early retirement--a pension for which you'd sucked up and sycophanted almost twenty years--when your obscenely overweight and extremely crass boss told you that if you didn't raise the company's market share by the end of the year, you'd be out on your ass without a dime? If you're Sky Thorne, Senior V.P. of Tailburger--a fringe fast food chain whose specialties are batter dipped, deep-fried meat patties and 96-oz. beef-flavored shakes--you'll get to work on as many harebrained, desperate schemes as you can think of. And if that means launching a marketing campaign that asks the public, "Why just abuse your body when you can torture it?" then damn it, that's what you'll do! Because Sky Thorne is ready to fight dirty and do anything necessary to earn the pension he sees as the reset button on life, liberty, and the pursuit of unadulterated deep-fried happiness. Red Meat Cures Cancer is a hilarious and poignant romp through a world of excess, and marks the arrival of a great new satirical voice in American literature.… (mehr)

Red Meat Cures Cancer is the kind of dark humor that is hit-or-miss. Although there were parts of it were I was laughing out loud, there were also segments were I felt the humor was forced. Most characters besides Sky feel underdeveloped, some on the border of one-dimensional caricature. When I reached the conclusion, there was a feeling that something was missing, as I wondered "is that it?"
I guess that it is up to each person's taste, and I could only recommend this read to those who are really into dark humor.

I obtained a copy of this book through the LibraryThing member giveaway, and I am providing a review in exchange for the copy. ( )

Maybe I'm more of a stick-in-the-mud than I originally thought. The book, though obviously satire, just didn't strike me as all that funny. I could tell the author's political stance within the first 5 pages, and didn't love the played out stereotypes. I felt the author took too easy of a path intellectually and that, in my opinion, hurt what could have been a brilliant novel. I gave it 3 stars because it had a lot of potential, and would appeal to those who adhere to the same worldview/political stance as the author. ( )

When I saw the title of this book I expected something unusual, something a little out of the ordinary, and I 'm not disappointed. This book was funny and interesting, even more so than I thought. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone, and I would definitely look for more by this author.
