If you'd asked me to imagine the book that invented the shounen-ai genre, I never could have imagined The Heart of Thomas. This beautifully drawn story of love and loss in a German boarding school is hauntingly dark and compulsively readable.

The story is melodramatic, but the characters have a gritty reality, and their suffering never feels romanticized or fan service-y. Instead, The Heart of Thomas convincingly portrays adolescent experiences of isolation, attraction, and identity and tells a poignant story of surviving trauma. Yes, there are cute boys kissing, but that is decidedly not the point.

Writers of contemporary LGBT fiction for young adults should definitely look back to this classic. ( )

I wanted to love this more. I thought I'd love this more. But I couldn't forgive the classic manga melodrama because I found the plot just too meandering. And the romance? I'm afraid I'm a tad too old for it. ( )

Voor de zoveelste keer heeft de Japanse cultuur mij weer weten te verwonderen. Dit keer met de manga Heart of Thomas, oorspronkelijk uit 1974 en pas in 2013 in het Engels vertaald uitgegeven.

Deze manga gaat over een Duits gymnasium jongensinternaat waar een van de leerlingen, Thomas Werner zelfmoord heeft gepleegd op 13-jarige leeftijd wegens het in de liefde afgewezen worden door een andere scholier.

Dit gegeven roept al gelijk zoveel vragen bij mij op. Zoals hoe komt een Japanse auteur erbij om over een Duits internaat te schrijven? Wat is het met die fascinatie voor die blonde jongens? En de jongens worden veelal als schattig afgeschilderd. Veel vrouwelijker dan ik van een jongensinternaat zou verwachten.

Deze manga is specifiek geschreven voor jonge meisjes. Hoe zit in het Japan met het taboe op homoseksualiteit? En diepe romantische liefde bij 13-jarigen die zelfs in staat zijn om er zelfmoord voor te willen plegen? Gaat dat niet wat ver? Of is het allemaal niet zo letterlijk bedoeld? Zoiets zie ik in Westerse strips voor deze leeftijdsgroep in de jaren zeventig toch niet snel verschijnen.

Het verhaal wordt voornamelijk verteld doordat het gericht wordt op Juli, de jongen die Thomas had afgewezen. Dat dit allemaal niet zo maar recht toe recht aan in elkaar zit, blijkt als het verhaal zich steeds meer ontvouwt met wat er voor de zelfmoord van Thomas heeft plaatsgevonden. Door middel van een uitwisselingsstudent die als twee druppels water op Thomas Werner lijkt, wordt de zelfmoord van Thomas nog eens extra levendig gehouden.

De mangavorm maakt dat de gebeurtenissen zich snel opvolgen, logisch want elke maand werd een deel gepubliceerd en moesten de lezers geboeid blijven. En er is dan ook het gevoel dat de werkelijke ontknoping voortdurend wordt uitgesteld. Voor mijn gevoel had het dan ook wel een stuk korter gekund.

Een ander minpuntje van de Engelse uitgave is dat ze tekeningen niet gespiegeld hebben. De oorspronkelijk Japanse manga zal getekend zijn om van achter naar voren te lezen en van rechts naar links. De Engelse uitgave is gedrukt om te lezen van voor naar achteren maar de bladzijden zelf moet je wel van rechts naar links lezen. In het begin had ik dat nog niet door en vond het dan ook maar heel rommelig geschreven. Dit weet ik eerst aan dat het Japans was tot ik door had hoe het werkelijk zit. Hier had wel een waarschuwing over voorin de uitgave geplaatst mogen worden.

Alles bij elkaar weer een wonderlijke blik in de mangacultuur, iets dat me blijft fascineren. ( )

A Japanese comic translated to English about German schoolboys who are all (unrequitedly) in love with each other. It's all very Romantic (capital letter very much intended) but manages to avoid going over the line into absurdity. ( )

The Heart of Thomas is the most recent English translation of a piece of shōjo manga by Moto Hagio, and reading it means I've finally read all of Hagio's work available in English. (For a brief period, anyway; there's a translation of Otherworld Barbara coming out this fall.) It's the first long-form work by her to be translated into English; previous volumes have collected her short fiction. It's also her first piece of realist fiction in English, with no fantasy or science fiction elements.

Heart of Thomas is about a boy at an all-boy German boarding school who commits suicide; from what I had read, I expected to be because of homophobia. Heart of Thomas is a very different book than that, though, and much more complicated. Thomas actually dies right in the opening chapter, and the book chronicles the effects his death has on the community, especially Juli, with whom Thomas wanted to be involved, and a boy named Erich who comes to the school just days after Thomas's death and looks a lot like him. Many of the boys at Schlotterbach are interested in other boys; there's no hint of homophobia, and the male-male romantic and sexual relationships are diverse in their types.

There are a lot of characters; in addition to Thomas, Erich, and Juli, there's Ante (a young manipulator who competed with Thomas for Juli's attentions), Oskar (a world-weary older boy who is Juli's only confidante), and many more. Hagio is impressive in the depth of her characterization: the 500 pages of this book are a slow unspooling of information about the characters, and situations that initially seem obviously are slowly revealed to be more complicated as time passes. Each and every character turns out to have a subjectivity that's not obvious when the book begins, but influences their actions and feelings throughout. In their ways, each boy here is damaged and hurt, and some of the sections where we find out what's going on are riveting and painful. It's over 500 pages long, but it never feels padded or dull; Hagio keeps things going at exactly the right pace.

If the book is summed up by anything, it's by this exchange:
JULI: If someone loves you, do you have to love him back?
ERICH: Well... no, but...
JULI: Exactly.

There's no easy solutions here, because few of the characters are in love with ones who love them back; indeed, I think every love here is unrequited: but by the book's end, some of the characters have opened up enough to reciprocate and form real relationships, even if they're not necessarily romantic or sexual. It's a beautiful book, in both word and image, and Hagio even throws in a few jokes for good measure. I've really enjoyed everything I've read by her, and Heart of Thomas continues that trend. Here's hoping for more translations soon.
