Drawing on psychoanalysis, literature, and personal experience, Necessary Losses is a philosophy for understanding and accepting life's inevitabilities. In this book, Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are a certain and necessary part of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers' protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. I started this many months ago and kept it in the bathroom to read periodically. It was full of great advice, the best of which was summed up at the end.
"We can't understand our history unless we recognize that it is comprised of both outer and inner realities." ( )

The lessons and insights obtained from this book do not diminish with time. Keeping it forever for reference. ( )

This is a remarkable book that sheds light on how we grow and change through the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. Losses such as our mothers' protection, impossible expectations in relationships, losses of our younger selves and the loss of loved ones through separations and death. We can gain perspective, true maturity and a fuller wisdom about life by reading this book, slowly and thoughtfully. And then keep it to read it again and again. Losses happen and having an understanding helps the process. This book will be on my bookshelf for keeping me healthy in my mind and perceptions of life's losses. ( )

Due to what I'm assuming is recycled ISBNs, "Raffles" by David Fletcher had been combined with this book. While it does share an ISBN with a certain edition of Necessary Losses, it is most definitely not the same work and should not be combined.
