Although this book starts off right where The Draughtlanders ended, I found it a little jarring to begin with. Eli suddenly starts to hear voices that may or may not be the gods advising him, Sabine thinks of nothing other than vague but bloody revenge, and Seth is driven off to follow merry path of recruitment to his private army.
Although I appreciate the moral complexity of the situation the siblings find themselves in, I found their characters a little bit strident - Seth the least so.
But again, the world building is engaging, and I was always eager to find out what happened next. The ending astonished me, and I am eager to read the final volume. ( )
