Léon Bloy fu scrittore scandaloso e violento, e non ha perso a tutt'oggi nulla della sua forza, anche perché protetto dalla corazza dello stile, da una lingua vibrante e corrusca. Giornalista che esecrava i giornalisti - un caso parallelo a quello di Kraus -, teologo dello Spirito Santo e giudice durissimo della sua epoca, passò la vita a mettersi in contrasto con tutto e con tutti, in una sovrana solitudine. Nel 1892, allorché la Francia era spazzata da un'onda di antisemitismo, egli pubblicò questo breve, densissimo libro che illumina la questione degli Ebrei di una luce metafisica, l'unica che possa aiutare a percepire tale mistero religioso e storico. In molti modi si può leggere Bloy: come un romanziere camuffato da teologo, come un teologo camuffato da romanziere, come un antico esegeta, come un critico ustorio del moderno, come un maestro dello humour nero («Il nostro tempo ha inventato la locuzione 'humour nero'; nessuno l'ha realizzata finora con l'efficacia e la ricchezza verbale di Léon Blor scrisse J.L. Borges). Tutto ciò traspare in Dagli Ebrei la salvezza, che è innanzitutto il commento a quattro parole del Vangelo di Giovanni: «Salus ex ludaeis est». Vivamente, anche aspramente contrapponendosi a Bloy, come in un duello fra esegeti, Ceronetti ha voluto accompagnare il testo con un saggio, fra i suoi più audaci, che ci mostra in quante diverse direzioni ci si possa muovere sulla base delle stesse parole evangeliche.
