Anyone who has grown up in a small town will understand the frustrations and limitations that Iris and her friend Collette feel. For a teen its not fun to see the same people do the same things day after day. And a graveyard is a strong temptation (one that I found irresistible at their age and in their situation). I could, despite being a decade older then either Iris or Collette, easily identify with them. Mitchell writes their reactions believably and with honesty--who hasn’t gotten tired of their friend who is constantly flirting and dragging you into their busy ‘couples’ life only to make you feel like an outsider? Or anxiety that what you had with that friend is disappearing as you grow older and have less in common?

Mitchell’s history with screenwriting is especially apparent in her attention to detail with the characters’ responses and the surroundings. The use of ‘Where y’at?’, a common local phrase from New Orleans (according to my handy dandy slang dictionary) is perhaps the most chilling part of the book for me. Each time Iris would hear it, I just got a chill down my spine and goose bumps on my arms.

An important motivating factor for the book is the friendship between Iris and Collette and how turning fourteen changed things for them. Collette was on the verge of wanting to be treated like a young woman--she wanted to primp and preen herself on the off chance a cute boy would happen by. Iris was content to keep things as they were--making up magical stories, ‘talking’ to spirits and throwing stones at the boys. As the two of them dig deeper into Elijah Landry’s disappearance--with the help from Ben, Collette’s new boyfriend--they’re both forced to confront the truth of their friendship and its future.

Shadowed Summer is sure to keep your attention from start to finish and keep you guessing as to what really happened to Elijah. In fact the resolution to the mystery forces a series of events that changes Iris’ perception of not only herself, but also of her town.

Shadowed Summer started very slowly, setting the mood of a hot summer in the deep south where strange things can happen especially in a cemetery late at night. Iris and her best friend Collette have spent many summers making up stories about all things paranormal, but at fourteen years old, things are starting to change. Collette has a boyfriend named Ben, and strange things are happening to Iris making her believe that she is being haunted by the ghost of Elijah, a boy who went missing in her hometown years ago. Collette and Ben want to help Iris, but as they investigate Elijah's disappearance, clues start leading Iris way to close to home.
Even though the book didn't really get moving until almost half way through, the last half was filled with event after event making the rest of the book a quick read. Overall a pretty good story with a few really terrifying scares. ( )

By turns suspenseful and perfectly sweet, filled with fantastically teenagerish teenagers, this was a quick, engaging read. I loved the way Mitchell painted the sticky heat of a southern summer and how she sketched out family dynamics. Totally perfect summer mystery. ( )

L’Estate dei fantasmi è un romanzo un po’ speciale. Sicuramente evocativo, possiamo dire che si piazza, in bilico, fra le ghost story e i romanzi mystery.

Certamente diretto ad un pubblico piuttosto giovane (12/14 anni), L’estate dei Fantasmi è il classico romanzo che “appartiene a ciascuno di noi” sotto molti aspetti. Quanti di noi hanno giocato alle streghe da bambini? Chi di noi non ha provato, almeno una volta, a fare un incantesimo? Quanti si sono ritrovati a crescere in un ambiente bigotto e un po’ chiuso come solo un paesello di provincia può essere? Per quanti di noi i lunghi mesi estivi hanno rappresentato un ottimo espediente per andare a caccia di improbabili misteri per non essere oppressi dal tedio mortale?

Qualunque cosa per inondare d’eccitazione e avventura le nostre miti e afose giornate estive.

E’ di questo che parla questo piccolo libro: di un mondo diverso fatto di percezioni diverse. Diverse solo come possono essere quelle di un adolescente, i cui occhi riescono ancora a vedere oltre le prove e la sterile realtà.

E cosa accadrebbe a Iris e Colette se un giorno riuscissero a vedere con i loro occhi Elijah, un ragazzo o, meglio, un fantasma? Nessuno crederà loro e per molti sarà facile giudicare ed accusarle di pazzia o chissà che altro. A cosa porterà questo incontro? Cosa vorrà Elijah da Iris e perché continua a ripeterle ossessivamente la stessa domanda?

E se tutto ciò che credevano essere un gioco, per ingannare le lunghe giornate estive, si tramutasse in qualcosa di più? Qual è il mistero che si nasconde dietro la morte del loro giovane amico “fantasma”? Eppure sembra che la tragica scomparsa di Elijah sia ancora ben presente fra le chiacchiere di molti, benché se nessuno osi farlo alla luce del sole.

Realtà, tragedia, mistero, incantesimi, segreti, superstizione. Iris non riesce più a comprendere i confini tra il reale e l’irreale, ma con l’aiuto dell’amica Colette e di Ben, ragazzo verso il quale prova “qualcosa”, riuscirà a dipanare la fitta rete di domande e misteri che si avvolgono intorno alla morte di Elijah.

Ovviamente ciò che Iris apprenderà sarà che, scavando impunemente nel passato, non sempre si ottiene le risposte o le soluzione che ci si aspetta. Intraprendere il viaggio verso la risposta a un mistero comporta la consapevolezza di dover accettare qualunque realtà ci venga posta alla fine della ricerca, anche se non è quella che ci aspettavamo.

Lo stile dell’autrice è diretto, semplice e veloce. Assolutamente perfetto per questo piccolo libro young adult in cui realtà adolescenziali finiranno inevitabilmente con l’intrecciarsi con tematiche più forti e spunti di riflessioni veramente notevoli.

Una piccola nota di merito va conferita alla “confezione” fornitaci dalla casa editrice. I romanzi GiuntiY, con le loro copertine rigide, rilegate con colori d’effetto e sempre intonati con la “tematica” della storia e dalle sovraccoperte eleganti e mai troppo “bambinesche” sono sempre un piccolo capolavoro. Personalmente trovo che siano squisiti da collezionare e da esporre; 14,50€ ben spesi.
