I was very excited after 52 when Renee Montoya became The Question. And this TPB reinforces that excitement. It's about four books of Blood, Deceit, Lust, Greed, and Murder as well as a parable of blood. And how Renee as The Question gets sucked into the whole thing. The books have to do with the Religion of Crime (aka the Dark Faith). And the religious organization the Order of the Stone (The tough guys who do the thuggy things) and Lilith's Daughters (who do the sex things).

So, Renee gets led around the world by the two organizations and learns about the four books and their ideas.

I liked that Batwoman was in the TPB, they had left that relationship hanging. We also got to see some of the GCPD too, which was cool. The Commissioner, Maggie, even Sgt. Bullock.

All in all it was a good (if short, but perhaps I've been reading too many multi-volume TPBs these days) TPB. I do wish that there were some more Question TPBs than there are with Renee instead of Vic in them. ( )

I picked up this book on the strength of Lazarus by the same author. I was not disappointed. This is a dark tale of obsession and sinister deeds. The Question is a faceless superhero, formerly a cop of Gotham city. She is on the trail of a loathsome cult of crime, which follows the tenets of Deceit, Lust, Greed and Murder. As she gets deeper into the investigation, her obsession with the cult and its practices begin to change her. Rucka admits some inspiration for the cult came from H.P. Lovecraft. Moody and sinister. Good stuff.

This is a prime example (along with Sandman) of American comics writers using the Superhero genre (the only one publishable for a time in the USA) as a thin veil for much deeper works. ( )

After a criminal cult attacks Kate Kane/Batwoman in 52, Volume 4, her ex-girlfriend Renee Montoya dons the guise of The Question and digs deep into the cult’s teachings to combat them. On her quest to find out more about this “Religion of Crime” and its ‘holy’ book, the “Crime Bible,” Montoya finds herself caught in a dangerous net spun by the group.

Rucka’s writing, as usual, shines in this tightly woven graphic novel, working so subtly that the reader finds themselves descending slowly along within Renee into the world of this dark faith. Of course, there are still moments of humor as Renee’s sardonic temper remains intact. Kate Kane/Batwoman makes appearances throughout, an added benefit to big fans of her (like me!), and the illustrations in this book are top notch – all making for an excellent read. ( )
